Drainage Solutions for London’s Clay Soil
If water sits in the same place after every storm, the fix is rarely “more seed.” It is usually a grade, soil, or runoff problem first.
London’s clay-heavy soil is great at holding water and terrible at letting it move quickly. That is why so many homeowners see puddling, soft lawn corners, soggy side yards, and water pushing toward foundations after spring thaw or heavy summer rain.
Most common drainage fixes
- Regrading: Often the best first step if the slope is wrong.
- Swales: Useful when you need to guide surface water across the yard instead of letting it pool.
- French drains: Helpful where water repeatedly collects and needs a dedicated exit path.
- Dry wells and catch systems: Better for specific concentrated runoff issues than for whole-yard problems.
What not to do
Do not throw topsoil on top of a drainage issue and expect it to disappear. Do not install expensive sod before the water path is fixed. And do not assume every wet lawn needs a drain. Sometimes the right answer is simply correcting grade and redirecting flow.
